'Fianar', as everyone calls it, is an essential stop on the RN7. Its Haute-Ville (upper town), one of Madagascar's rare historic urban ensembles, lines up churches, cobbled lanes and brick houses with wooden balconies. All around, the hills of Betsileo country carry terraced rice fields, vines and tea bushes — a terroir unique on the island.

What to see in Fianarantsoa
Walk up into the listed Haute-Ville: the stroll between churches, workshops and viewpoints over the rice fields is the best way to grasp the Betsileo soul. The curious can board the FCE train (Fianarantsoa–East Coast): a full day of railway adventure through forests and cliffs down to Manakara, to the rhythm of the markets that climb aboard at every station.
Nearby
Twenty-five kilometres away, Lake Sahambavy borders Madagascar's only tea plantation, which welcomes visitors. On the road south, Ambalavao is worth a stop for its Antemoro paper and its great zebu market, before the Anja community reserve and its ring-tailed lemurs at the foot of the cliffs. And an hour and a half to the east, the rainforest of Ranomafana National Park awaits.
