Known locally as "Tana", Antananarivo is the gateway for most trips to Madagascar. Built across steep hillsides, the city offers a striking contrast between colonial-era architecture, winding lanes and the bustle of its popular markets.

What to see in Antananarivo
The Rova, the fortified palace of the former kings and queens of Imerina, sits atop the city's highest hill and offers a sweeping view over Tana. The lively Analakely district and its covered market are a great way to soak up everyday Malagasy life, while Lake Anosy and its war memorial offer a quieter break downtown.
Craft lovers will enjoy the Digue market, known for precious-wood carvings, embroidery and Malagasy semi-precious stones.
Practical tips
Traffic can be heavy at rush hour, so plan extra time for getting around. The historic districts are best explored on foot — as in any large capital, keep an eye on your belongings.
