Andasibe-Mantadia

A lush rainforest east of Antananarivo, home to the indri and its call that carries for miles.

Located in the Alaotra-Mangoro region, about 150 km from Antananarivo, the Andasibe-Mantadia complex is one of Madagascar's most accessible wildlife destinations. It combines two separate protected areas: the Analamazaotra reserve, usually just called Andasibe, and Mantadia National Park, wilder and far less visited.

Location

Alaotra-Mangoro region, east of Antananarivo.

Best time to visit

April to November, during the dry season.

Getting there

About 150 km / 3–4 hours by road on the RN2 from Tana.

Suggested stay

1 to 2 days is enough to explore both parks.

What to see in Andasibe-Mantadia

The undisputed star is the indri, the largest living lemur, instantly recognisable by its powerful call echoing through the forest from first light. The Analamazaotra reserve makes it relatively easy to spot, thanks to local guides who track the groups daily. Mantadia, denser and wetter, holds richer biodiversity but demands a bit more walking.

Night walks along the forest edge reveal nocturnal lemurs and chameleons that stay hidden during the day, spotted only by torchlight.

Practical tips

Pack waterproof clothing and sturdy walking shoes — the forest stays damp even outside the rains. Book your night walk as soon as you arrive, since group sizes are limited.
