Lake Tritriva

South-west of Antsirabe, the track ends at the rim of a crater you would never guess was there: Lake Tritriva appears all at once, fifty metres below, an almost unreal dark green, ringed by cliffs and pines. This is the classic highland excursion — short and spectacular — and it comes with a legend that every guide tells slightly differently, as much part of the scene as the rock itself.

What to see at Lake Tritriva

The walk around the crater rim takes about an hour and is the heart of the visit: the path follows the ridge, crosses slabs of bare rock and opens onto sheer viewpoints where the colour of the water shifts by the hour, from turquoise to bottle green depending on the light. A steep path drops to the shore, where you can finally gauge the height of the walls.

Village guides tell the legend of Rabeniomby and Ravolahanta, two young people whose families refused to let them marry and who are said to have thrown themselves into the lake together; a tree leaning over the water is associated with them, and locals maintain that the water rises in the dry season and falls in the rains, unlike every other lake. On the same road, Lake Andraikiba is wider, easier to reach and edged with lawns where families from Antsirabe come to picnic on Sundays.
